Kevin McNamara, the Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness for the Government of Nova Scotia, pushed the government to rely on evidence-based resources such as The Cochrane Library at the Standing Senate Committee meeting on Social Affairs, Science and Technology in early December. The Senators met to discuss the continuing study to examine progress in implementing the 2004, 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care in Canada. This was their thirteenth and final meeting.
Mr. McNamara stated, “. . . much of the information that people look at on the Internet is incorrect. One way to help Canadians is to look at the Cochrane Reviews, which for about $500,000 a year would give Canadians good information. At the present time only three provinces plus the territories have purchased licences. This is a credible source that uses all the research, all the good information that comes out, and is a way to get good information not just to individual Canadians but also to clinicians.”
