Movember: Prostate Cancer Awareness

Each year, men all over the world grow moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. This initiative, called Movember, encourages men to register at Movember.com and seek sponsorships for their moustache-growing efforts while photo-documenting their progress. Movember raises awareness for prostate cancer by encouraging public discussion of the often ignored men’s health issue. All of the funds raised goes towards programs run directly by Movember and Prostate Cancer Canada. In 2011, over 854,000 people from around the world participated, raising $125.7 million CAD.

In support of Movember/Prostate Cancer Awareness, here are some relevant Cochrane Reviews:

Screening for prostate cancer

Radiotherapy after surgery for prostate cancer

Bisphosphonates for advanced prostate cancer

Maximal androgen (hormone) blockade therapy may improve chances of longer survival in men with advanced prostate cancer, but may not be suitable for all men.
