The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Malaria Branch is hiring holding an open competition to hire a Chief Research Assistant and a Research Assistant. Position and application details are as follows: 

Chief Research Assistant

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Malaria Branch is conducting a literature review and is seeking a doctoral-level epidemiologist. The project is the Health Care Provider Performance Review (HCPPR), a systematic literature review of studies that evaluate strategies to improve health worker performance in developing countries. This is an exciting project related to global health in which a complex and rich body of research is being summarized to lead to evidence-based guidelines for improving health worker performance in developing countries --- an urgent need, given the increased financial support that donors are providing for health programs overseas. The HCPPR team includes staff from CDC, Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization, Management Sciences for Health, and Johns Hopkins University.

This position is a CDC Foundation field employee assigned to the Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria at CDC, based in Atlanta, GA. This is a full-time position lasting 3 years. No previous background in global health or malaria is required. The start date is October 1, 2015.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities include day-to-day management of five Research Assistants (who will perform data abstraction), as well as data coding, data cleaning, and dissemination of project results (which might involve travel). The Chief Research Assistant will also assist with data abstraction, which involves: 1) conducting the literature search and screening study reports for eligibility; 2) reading and abstracting data from studies that evaluated strategies to improve health worker performance in a developing country setting; 3) entering and validating the abstracted data into an electronic database; 4) corresponding with study authors, if needed, to obtain relevant information not included in study reports; and 5) analyzing results of the review. Additional duties associated with the HCPPR project may also be assigned.  

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in public health, with a concentration in epidemiology or related fields
  • Strong skills in study design, sampling, and analysis
  • 5 years or more of work experience, including some experience managing a team
  •  Interest in global health issues
  • Skill in oral and written communications, gathering and conveying information, making oral presentations, and preparing reports, correspondence, and other written materials; and
  • Enjoys detail-oriented work and collaborating as part of a team

Salary Range:  $68,000 - $78,000 per year plus 29% benefits depending on education and experience

Research Assistant

The project is the Health Care Provider Performance Review (HCPPR), a systematic literature review of studies that evaluate strategies to improve health worker performance in developing countries. This is an exciting project related to global health in which a complex and rich body of research is being summarized to lead to evidence-based guidelines for improving health worker performance in developing countries --- an urgent need, given the increased financial support that donors are providing for health programs overseas. The HCPPR team includes staff from CDC, Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization, Management Sciences for Health, and Johns Hopkins University.

The HCPPR team is seeking five people who could begin on October 1, 2015.

Additional duties associated with the HCPPR project may also be assigned.
