Dr. George A. Wells has been voted the 2015 UOHI (University of Ottawa Heart Institute) Investigator of the Year. Dr. Wells is co-convenor of the non-randomised Cochrane methods group and member of the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Editiorial Board in Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. George Wells serves as Director of the Cardiovascular Research Methods Centre. He holds a remarkable track record, having held 248 peer reviewed grants either as a Principal or Co-Investigator. Most recently, Dr. Wells was successful in securing his largest peer reviewed funding to date of $26M over five years as a Co-Principal Investigator on the Canadian Arrhythmia Network (CANet), a Network of Centres of Excellence, in collaboration with colleagues at the UOHI and Western University.
Dr. Wells has collaborated widely and published nearly 700 papers in peer reviewed journals. His h-index, an indication of a scientist's productivity level and citation impact, is in the über high range, at 95 (typically, an h-index of a successful scientist is ~20; an h-index of an outstanding scientist is ~40). He is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings.
Dr. Wells has supervised many research trainees including over 80 graduate students (PhD and MSc level), residents, fellows, and mentored staff.
This tremendous success has not gone unnoticed in the wider research community in Canada and globally. Dr. Wells has received many prestigious external accolades. He was awarded the University of Ottawa Excellence in Research Award in 2013/14; the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) Top Achievement in Health Research in 2011, amongst other awards. In 2014, Dr. Wells was recognized as one of the 400 most influential medical researchers in the past decade.
