Cochrane Canada Symposium 2017 - Living Systematic Review Workshop

Living Systematic Review Workshop and Meeting

Systematic reviews have provided valuable evidence for health care decision makers. However, new evidence is continually being generated and systematic reviews can become outdated. We need to keep up with this new evidence and incorporate it into systematic reviews quickly and accurately.

With the advent of technological innovations, such as machine learning and online platforms, we have the opportunity to produce reviews that are continually updated, incorporating new, relevant data as it becomes available: LIVING SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS. Living systematic reviews (LSRs) break the historical trade-off between review quality and currency.

Living systematic reviews differ from traditional systematic reviews in several ways, all of which have  important implications for review methods and processes, affecting authors, editors and publishers. Living Systematic Review approaches are being piloted internationally, with Cochrane at the forefront of method development and publishing approaches.

Living Systematic Review Workshop

The aim of this one-day workshop is to introduce attendees to the state-of-the-science in living systematic reviews. In a series of interactive sessions, attendees will gain a practical understanding of review methods for living systematic reviews, processes and workloads, publication issues, and how technology can help. Attendees will hear from teams piloting living systematic reviews within and beyond Cochrane, and contribute to conversations about how living systematic review methods should move forward. By the end of the day, attendees will have an understanding of when a living systematic review is appropriate, the implications for review production and processes, and what needs to be considered when undertaking a living review.

This one-day meeting is a working meeting with the goals to plan next steps related to LSR research methods and activities, and possibly plan for examples and a suite of papers. Potential projects may include a general overview of methods, statistical issues, link with guidelines, and decision rules - but these projects will be based on participants’ interests. The meeting will provide dedicated time for groups to discuss these issues and move forward with a research agenda. This meeting is open to all members of the Living Systematic Reviews Network. If you are interested in participating in this meeting, but are not yet a member of the LSR Network, please contact canada@cochrane.org.

Agenda: A detailed agenda is available.
